Current and future rules for nonprofits

Current law…

Ontario’s Corporations Act (OCA), is in effect now.

For more information about the laws that apply to your nonprofit now see Current law.

A new law…

The Ontario government is modernizing the law that governs how nonprofits operate. Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010, or the ONCA, will take effect in the future.

For more information about how to get ready for the ONCA see Future law.

Note:
On November 1, 2017, the Ontario government passed the Cutting Unnecessary Red Tape Act, 2017. Although it has passed, it has not yet taken effect. Once the Act takes effect, it will change Ontario’s Corporations Act (OCA) and Ontario’s Not-for-Profit Corporations Act, 2010 (ONCA). The Act’s changes to the ONCA will not take effect until the ONCA takes effect.

While this site does not reflect these new changes, the Ontario Nonprofit Network has a summary of the changes in Bill 154 that affect nonprofits. CLEO will update this site as soon as possible.

Visit the Ministry of Government and Consumer Services’ ONCA site for a guide, default bylaw, transition checklist, and more. You can also access this information in French.
